The series “Uus arhitektuur” (“New Architecture”), broadcast on Estonian Television, explores Estonian architecture, its creators and the issues shaping it today. It also features several projects connected with Merko.
Created by Ene-Maris Tali in 2026, “Uus arhitektuur” follows the series “Puit arhitektuuris” (“Wood in Architecture”), “Lõpetamata linn” (“The Unfinished City”) and “Loodud kestma” (“Built to Last”).
The series focuses on cultural heritage, including monuments, historic buildings, buildings within heritage conservation areas, and industrial and military heritage. It also explores changes related to the climate. The overarching theme is how to renovate old buildings and construct new ones so that they retain their value for years to come and are protected against climate-related damage.
Several projects connected with Merko are featured. The fourth episode explores the installation of a tower lift in the 700-year-old St Nicholas’ Church, making its unique views of the city accessible to many more people. It also presents the lighting scheme that enhances the medieval walls and towers of Tallinn’s Old Town. While Merko helped fund the lift at St Nicholas’ Church as one of its supporters, we were directly involved in creating the lighting for the city walls: the work was commissioned by Merko’s sister company Kapitel and carried out by Merko’s electrical construction team in 2019.
The fifth episode focuses on the Krulli quarter, where the developers and architects have chosen to preserve and reuse everything whose material quality allows it – from concrete blocks and trusses to entire buildings. This approach is transforming Krulli into a welcoming living environment based on the principles of circular architecture, with Merko carrying out the construction.
The sixth episode features the Arter quarter, built by Merko, while the seventh explores the construction of Rail Baltica’s Ülemiste terminal. The eighth and final episode looks at the future of the Noblessner quarter.
The series is available to watch on – Jupiter.
