Viimsi State Gymnasium earns at the “Wooden Building of the Year 2018” competition the award for the best usage of laminated timber
The Viimsi State Gymnasium built by Merko earns the people’s choice award at the “Wooden Building of the Year 2018” competition and Arcwood’s special award for the best usage of laminated timber.
The Wooden Building of the Year competition is organised by the Estonian Forest and Wood Industries Association with the objective of highlighting the best usages of wood as a construction and finish material from an architectural, technical and constructional point of view. This year’s competition was the sixteenth competition in a row.
The building of the Viimsi National Upper Secondary School is designed for 540 students, and its design centred around creating a building with an as low energy consumption as possible. The new schoolhouse in Viimsi is the first public building in Estonia where the load-bearing constructions consist mainly of cross-laminated timbers (CLT). The authors of the architectural solution for the building are Novarc Group AS and KAMP Arhitektid OÜ.
