Park being constructed in Uus-Veerenni

We are building a public park of more than 8,500 m2 with playgrounds for children and a recreational area for adults in the residential quarter of Uus-Veerenni. The park, a new addition to Tallinn’s urban space, is intended for public use and will be completed in the autumn of 2022.

“When building a living quarter, we always keep in mind the quarter as a whole. In addition to professional architectural designs and the high-quality construction of the buildings, the standard of Merko is always to landscape the areas surrounding the homes and create recreational areas for the residents. In more substantial development sites, we also build larger facilities for public use,” explained Uus-Veerenni’s development manager Alar Toomik.

We are building a new park between the Uus-Veerenni quarter and the buildings on Vana-Lõuna Street. The park area starts behind the Pille 4 apartment buildings and extends to the former machine hall of the Luther furniture factory, i.e. the current Äripäev building.

The park has been designed by KINO Landscape Architects. Architects Karin Bachmann and Mirko Traks of the same office have also created the courtyard solution for the first phase of residential buildings in Uus-Veerenni, which won the annual award of the Association of Landscape Architects in 2020.

“The Uus-Veerenni public park is based on the principles of sustainable landscape architecture. In addition to adding new landscaping elements, we will continue to use the stratification of the former industrial land cleverly, looking at the anthropogenic material in the area, such as asphalt and concrete, as a resource. The demolition of the hard surface into fractions of different sizes mimics the crumbling process of natural rocks, and the asphalt cuts become usable relief and form places with different microclimates and communities,” landscape architect Karin Bachmann explains in the vision for the park.

The backyards of the houses completed in Uus-Veerenni so far have confirmed the extent to which greenery and the opportunity of a pleasant stay outdoors are valued. The new public park of more than 8,500 m2 is based on the same goals – the well-thought-out green area is illuminated and offers many opportunities for spending one’s time. The park will boast peaceful resting places and opportunities for active play. Swings, climbing frames and picnic areas are planned as attractions.

The landscaping of Uus-Veerenni Park is based on the principles of supporting biodiversity. The park uses semi-natural biotic communities that provide habitat and food for both insects and birds and require minimal maintenance compared to regularly mowed areas. The existing landscaping will be preserved as much as possible, and the additional shrubs and trees planted in the park will be durable and suitable for the urban environment, while creating a cosy and homely environment.

In parallel with the construction of the park area, we will also complete the construction of Tiiu Street within the quarter. While the courtyards in the immediate vicinity of the Uus-Veerenni residential buildings are taken care of by the apartment associations, the streets and infrastructure as well as the park area will be handed over to the city of Tallinn, which will take care of the daily maintenance of the infrastructure and facilities.

The development area of Uus-Veerenni is approximately 12 hectares. There will be almost 50 residential buildings in the quarter, which will be completed in stages. To date, residents have moved into more than 20 buildings and 15 buildings are under construction, with a kindergarten and a commercial building also planned for the quarter.
