Merko establishes 140 km of pipelines in Vääna-Jõesuu and launches new phase of work

Merko, which is performing construction on the public water supply and sewerage mains and waste water pump stations in the summer resort area of Vääna-Jõesuu, has completed the first three parts of the work one and half years ahead of deadline. The rapid results were made possible by the constructive and efficient cooperation with the contracting entity, the local inhabitants and subcontractors. Today, Merko will start construction of the fourth stage in the area of Puraviku and Nõmmerohu tee, where 8 km of pipeline is planned to be laid by this September.

The contracting entity – the Harku municipality-owned water utility OÜ Strantum – built some buffer time in the deadline for the first three contracts, but Merko´s pace of work surprised everyone in light of the complicated conditions. A project of this size requires professional partners and comprehensive cooperation; it must be said that everything went smoothly with Merko,” said Strantum’s project manager Valdo Liiv.

“It was a large-scale project that is essential to this area and we are sincerely glad that we were able to complete the construction work one and half years ahead of schedule and also before this year’s spring-summer season when more people will be living in Vääna-Jõesuu. Today the water and sewerage mains are in the ground, over 2,400 property owners have an opportunity to connect to the water supply and the asphalt, streets, yards and gates and vegetation impacted during construction have been restored to at least the condition they were in before the work. We apologize once again for inconveniences related to the work and thank the residents for their responsive cooperation and understanding attitude,” said Merko Ehitus Eesti AS project manager Peeter Laidma.

Merko Ehitus Eesti and Merko Infra laid 70 kilometres of water pipeline and 72 kilometres of sewerage pipelines in parts 1, 2 and 3 of construction of the Vääna-Jõesuu water supply and sewerage system. More than 2,400 registered plots of land can now be hooked up to the water and sewerage mains, which improves the standard of living significantly for the local population. In addition, the company can lay water lines running all the way to the homes, if desired.

Today Merko will start performing a new contract – fourth stage of construction, laying water and sewerage pipe in the area of Puraviku and Nõmmerohu tee. In the process, 8 kilometres of pipe will be laid and the expected completion deadline is this September. The company asks for the understanding and cooperation of residents during the construction period.

In the framework of the Harku municipality water resources management project co-financed from the European Union Cohesion Fund, a total of nearly 200 km of water and sewerage pipe, modern water treatment plants and a new waste water treatment centre will be established in the villages of Vääna-Jõesuu, Viti and Suurupi. “Although work continues in Suurupi and parts of Vääna-Jõesuu, thanks to the pipes previously laid, the first customers can now start consuming public water and sewerage services in February,” said deputy mayor of Harku Municipality, Vello Viiburg. “By the end of 2014, the last excavator should leave the villages, at which point a key stage in the modernization of Harku municipality can be considered complete.”
