We started construction of the Uus-Veerenni quarter – located between Veerenni and Vana-Lõuna streets and feeling like a town of its own in the middle of the city – in 2018. From that moment until today, the quarter has become home to nearly 500 families and many small businesses. Upon completion, it will be home to nearly 1,400 families.

The Uus-Veerenni quarter is characterised by a unique location with everything within walking distance and Scandinavian architecture that opens up views of the courtyards, greenery and beyond. There are Internet-connected smart homes that cleverly enable various home operations to be controlled remotely and courtyards that have been recognised and awarded for their environmentally friendly solutions and diversity. The community and the sense of community are growing, and the kindergarten surprises with its many innovative ideas. All of this comes together to provide a complete and comprehensive living environment with an abundance of small-town charm in the heart of the big city.

From the start, the focal point in the creation of the Uus-Veerenni quarter has been the human being and its constantly expanding needs and expectations for the surrounding living environment. User-centredness has been a keyword throughout the construction, and this is immediately visible in how the nature of the quarter and what is found there reflect the desires of the residents. In this way, a home in Uus-Veerenni does not start and end at the door but extends much further.

Another part of the quarter’s small town charm is the city park, completed in December 2022, with its various playgrounds, relaxation areas, sculptures by Jass Kaselaan to enjoy on a walk, and public bookcases where you can borrow a good read or share new finds with your neighbours. In 2020, the inner courtyard of stage I of Uus-Veerenni received the Annual Award of the Estonian Association of Landscape Architects in the Category of Courtyard Areas, and in 2023, the district’s park was also recognised with the Annual Award of the Estonian Association of Landscape Architects. Both have been completed in cooperation with KINO landscape architects, with Velvet design agency our partner in developing the park’s graphic design and signage.

Since the focus of the Uus-Veerenni block is primarily on people and not cars (parking has mostly been moved into underground parking floors), in November 2023, the central area was transformed into an intermediate park while it awaits the development of future homes and a commercial building. Here, for example, sports lovers can find a volleyball court, a basketball court and an outdoor gym, green fingers have several planter boxes at their disposal, and there are spacious green areas to play with your pet, as well as relaxation areas and sheltered spots in which to pleasantly while away the time. The idea behind the intermediate park is to provide residents an area for different activities and ways of spending their free time while the space transitions between its old and new uses.

User-centredness was also an important element in the construction of the intermediate park. In cooperation with Velvet and based on their research, we identified the activities and opportunities residents most miss in their neighbourhood and used that input to select the elements that can be found in the park today. With the help of KINO landscape architects, these elements were then integrated with the principle of recycling to devise a comprehensive concept and design.

The focus of the construction of the intermediate park in the Uus-Veerenni quarter was to produce as few new materials as possible – because our world is filled with more artificial materials that we can make use of already – and to create something that could be maximally recycled in other locations within the quarter in the future. The park makes use of the artificial materials accumulated at the site over the years, the natural elements and the new play and sports facilities as equally valuable resources – the fusion of which has created a multi-layered activity site. The juxtaposition of the existing and the new connect the old and present environments, blending historical meanings with modern ones – the result is harmony, the smallest possible footprint and, in short, a cleaner living environment for all of us.

In sum, a lot has happened in the Uus-Veerenni quarter in the last six years – but even more is yet to come. There is always something new being added as the quarter keeps getting better all the time.
