Uus-Veerenni padel complex now open
The Uus-Veerenni residential quarter that Merko has been developing and building now has an operational outdoor padel centre. A new artwork created by Heigo Jelle greets people arriving at Uus-Veerenni. The existing public areas here – a park, sculpture promenade and outdoor gym – have received additions that offers more enjoyable opportunities for exercise and food for thought.
The four padel courts (address: Pille 21) offer enjoyment for experienced and novice players alike and are open to both residents and the general public. The operator of the centre is Padelsquare, and playing time can be booked on the Playtomic app.
“Location is very important for padel players, who tend to opt for courts near their home or workplace. Since Uus-Veerenni has grown very rapidly, it was a logical step to establish courts here. We also wanted them to be more than courts for playing padel but an appealing, integral environment. I believe what we have accomplished here with Merko was totally worth waiting for. The first impressions and feedback have been very positive and we hope the Uus-Veerenni community will quickly warm to the centre,“ said one of Padelsquare’s leaders, Mats Tamme.
The fully self-service courts are open from 7am to 11pm every day. The complex also boasts dressing rooms, a landscaped relaxation area. Racket rentals are available. Uus-Veerenni will host beginner courses, regular training sessions and tournaments that will encourage people to try out a new sport.
Merko and Padelsquare have also launched an initiative where kids’ practice groups can use the courts free on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to noon. The goal is to get kids associated with a specific coach and let them work together on their skills. To be eligible to use the courts for free, a child must have a coach and a training plan; they should then make arrangements by email: veerenni@padelsquare.ee.
“Encouraging people to exercise is very important for Merko. We are a long-time contributor to the Estonian Health Trails project to ensure that as many people as possible around the country have recreational trails near their home. Free playing time at Uus-Veerenni gives children an opportunity to create and maintain healthy lifestyles during the summer,” said Taavi Kotkas, development manager for Uus-Veerenni residential community.
Public artworks are another important value for Merko. A sculpture by Heigo Jelle entitled Pure Love now can be found by the building at Pille 4/1, adding quirky charm and 1.5 tonnes of love to Uus-Veerenni.
“It’s not here just for beauty’s sake – the work was created to get people to stop, think and grin. It can be interpreted as imparting the lesson that in a right, pleasant kind of interaction, we give what we have to give and get something that we need in return – in this specific case, a full stomach, get rid of parasites, and maybe receive something else good or useful,” said Heigo Jelle.
The new sculpture complements the artworks already in place in Uus-Veerenni – a group of sculptures by Jass Kaselaan called Toys and another Jelle work called Toadstool Man.
Uus-Veerenni is a residential district being developed and built by Merko. Today, 38 buildings are finished and are home to close to 500 households. The next residential building in Uus-Veerenni will be completed in summer 2026.
