Yesterday, the top annual event in the construction field – the Ehitus 2025+ conference and award gala – was held at the Tallinn cruise ship terminal.
Discussions at the conference concerned how to generate more value in the construction sector. Merko was represented by BIM and Design Manager Alan Väli and Head of the Quality Department head Eneli Liisma, whodelivered presentations that drew attention to the Estonian construction sector’s current problems and opportunities.
At the evening gala, awards were handed out to those whose work has stood out on a nationwide scale. Merko community members won several titles:
A future name to watch in digital construction was Merko site engineer Sander Jaaniste, whose master’s degree thesis in the building design and construction management speciality at the Tallinn University of Technology – on the possibilities of using AI and machine learning to manage safety on job sites – has created plenty of practical value.
The young civil engineer of the year is Merko site engineer Elina Vink, who worked on the Arter Quarter and was, among other things, in charge of organizing the process of obtaining authorizations for use. Close to 20 different permits had to be obtained, this being a large-scale complex, and the whole process spanned 18 months.
Builder of the year is Merko project director Ahti Suppi, who oversaw the construction of Arter Quarter. The construction works lasted almost 4.5 years. Ahti led a Merko team of 34 engineers and a watchdog. The works required negotiation of 430 contracts for services and supply and all told, about 3400 people took part in the construction works. Arter is the largest complex ever built by Merko and one of the largest in Estonian history, and was awarded the Building of the Year title for 2025.
