In the run-up to Teachers’ Day, the city of Tallinn’s education awards were handed out at a gala event to acknowledge the most dedicated promoters in the sector.

The city and its education department thanked outstanding figures in the education sector, with a variety of awards going to more than 60 recipients ranging from nursery teachers and primary school teachers to subject teachers as well as other staff who help young people lay their foundation for their future lives. Educational initiatives and supporters of education were also highlighted.

We were proud to accept this year’s “Friend of Education” award, and would like to thank the Tallinn University of Technology Development Fund for nominating us in appreciation of our more than 20-years of partnership. A day later, we also took part at the nationwide Teacher of the Year gala, where we were recognized as a finalist in the Friend of Education category.

Merko’s contribution to education and supporting future engineers has been diverse:

  • we support university students, young academic staff and researchers with scholarships to promote studies and research;
  • we provide internships for students where they can put their knowledge into practice;
  • we organise visits to our construction sites and offer work shadowing opportunities to introduce engineering jobs;
  • we give guest lectures at universities and conferences to make education in the sector more practical;
  • we actively support student projects and events to inspire young future builders to stay in the profession;
  • we organise events for Merko employees’ children to introduce the domain of construction;
  • we visit schools to spark interest in engineering.

We’d like to thank all Merko employees who put in time, knowledge and energy for supporting engineering and who share their experience with youth. In this manner, we build a new generation of solid civil engineers who will continue Merko’s efforts toward a better, safer and more sustainable living environment.
