In April, Merko launched an invited architectural competition to find the best urban planning concept for a modern, attractive, and multifunctional residential district to be developed between Mäealuse and Mäepealse streets and Kadaka Puiestee in Tallinn. By unanimous decision, the jury awarded first place to PIN Arhitektid.
The competition was organised in cooperation with the Tallinn Urban Planning Department and the Estonian Association of Architects, and attracted entries from five architectural bureaus, each offering a unique approach to the site.
The winning concept, titled KODUKANT, was submitted by PIN Arhitektid.
The authors of the winning entry are Markus Nimik, Neeme Tiimus, Epp Ainelo, Armin Meisalu, Sume Elisabeth Värv, Jaan Port, Katrin Kaevats, and Mariann Kruuse.
Second and third places were shared between the entries KADAKATÄKS (by Pluss Arhitektid) and TEISIPÄEV (by LLRRLLRR).
According to the jury, KODUKANT stands out for its well-thought-out integration with the surrounding neighbourhood, thorough urban context analysis, and clear conceptual framework. The site plan successfully follows the cardinal directions, existing building patterns, construction lines, and key connections with the rest of the city. One of its main strengths lies in the balanced placement of building volumes and the relationship between private, semi-private, and public spaces.
The winning concept will serve as the basis for the future detailed plan of the Mäealuse 3a and 5a land plots.
