The home where Nõmme’s idyllic charm meets a passion for art
Nestled within Merko’s Nõmme 328 residential complex, Kärt’s family residence is an ode to the charming character of Tallinn’s Nõmme district. With thoughtful design and attention to detail, this serene and spacious home perfectly captures Nõmme’s garden city atmosphere. It also holds a delightful surprise – a captivating art gallery to engage the senses.
The Nõmme 328 residential and commercial building, centrally located in Nõmme, consists of two sections – old and new. The new part of the building harmoniously blends into the surrounding urban environment, while the old has been given a fresh look. Connecting the two sections of the complex is a gallery featuring a cell-like motif that is a nod to Nikolai von Glehn, the visionary founder of Nõmme. Clues to the local character can be found in the clever details adorning the facade, courtyard, lobby, stairwell, elevator hall, and underground parking level.
Kärt’s family – Kärt, her husband, two young daughters, and their white British Shorthair, Paul – moved to Nõmme 328 from their old residence in Rae municipality. Having grown up in Tallinn and accustomed to city life since childhood, both Kärt and her husband longed for a return to the urban lifestyle.
An apartment house that feels like a private residence
As the family embarked on their search for a new home, they had a clear vision in mind: an apartment with five spacious rooms, high ceilings, and a location that blends town and nature. Offering a layout that combines the comfort of a private house with the convenience of city living.
Nõmme 328 fit this vision perfectly while the location proved ideal in every respect: close to essential amenities such as shops, pharmacies and a vibrant market, and boasting excellent public transport links. Yet, embracing nature right on the doorstep, with direct access to cycling paths and forest trails, ideal for walks, bike rides, or skiing – depending on the season. At first sight, Kärt could already imagine herself strolling to the market on a summer morning to pick up fresh berries to top her homemade pancakes.
Kärt enjoys the roominess of their home and the privacy that comes when looking out the window doesn’t give a close-up look into the homes of others. Instead, she is greeted by peaceful views of pine trees and a charming neighbourhood of private estates. Kärt’s husband, on the other hand, is grateful for the practical amenities – with areas for hobbies and bike maintenance, roomy parking spaces, electric car charging stations, premium materials throughout the property, and a carefully designed architectural and garden layout.
Art awaits at every turn
When it came to furnishing their home, the family knew right away that they wanted to collaborate with an interior designer. Their idea was to blend a modern aesthetic with the unmistakable essence of Nõmme, creating a space in harmony with the spirit of the area and the architecture of the building. To help realise this vision, the family have adorned their home with custom-made furniture featuring slatted profiles and enhanced the interior with gilded accents.
Kärt believes that what truly makes the space theirs is the art. Her husband holds a deep admiration for Eduard Wiiralt, and from the first time seeing the apartment he envisioned a small gallery of the artist’s work in the hallway between the rooms. For Kärt, inspiration comes from the paintings of Epp Maria Kokamägi. The walls of their beautiful home now proudly display pieces by both artists.
