Merko engineering scholarship awarded to Alan Väli, young scientist scholarship to Andrus Räämet

The recipients of the scholarships awarded in cooperation between Merko Ehitus Eesti and the Tallinn University of Technology (TUT) Development Fund have been announced. The 1,920-euro engineering scholarship went to construction economics and management student Alan Väli and the 3,200-euro young scientist scholarship was given to Andrus Räämet, Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering.

“Selection of both scholarship winners was difficult as applications came in from strong candidates. Those who applied were very good, active students who are involved in research and various projects outside their studies and contribute to student life. The young scientist scholarship nominees were all talented, recognized candidates in their field, with good references,” said AS Merko Ehitus Eesti management board member Andres Agukas.

The AS Merko Ehitus Eesti engineering scholarship went to fourth-year construction economics and management student Alan Väli, who also completed an internship on the Ülemiste traffic interchange site. Aside from his studies, Alan has been working since autumn 2012 with the construction physics and energy efficiency chair at TUT and, with Targo Kalamees as his academic adviser, is taking part in the TUT-Uppsala University joint project, “Sustainable Management of Historic Rural Churches in the Baltic Sea Region.“

The young teaching staff/scientist scholarship was awarded by AS Merko Ehitus to Andrus Räämet, Ph.D. in civil and environmental engineering, who is an acclaimed faculty member of construction mechanics and technical mechanics. Andrus is employed at the TUT Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Mechanics and the Institute of Cybernetics Laboratory of Wave Engineering and is engaged in studying the Baltic Sea wave climate changes on Estonian coastal areas.

Merko has had a successful relationship with the Tallinn University of Technology since 2007, the goal being to promote specialized education and provide encouragement to the rising generation of professionals. Master’s degree scholarships have been awarded with support from the company, and Merko has also contributed to the awarding of the Professor Heinrich Laul Scholarship for young academic staff. Merko Ehitus Eesti’s agreement on the young scientist/teaching staff and civil engineering student scholarships signed in November 2013 runs until 2016.
