Renovation of Tallink City Hotel begins

On 24 September, we signed a construction contract for the renovation of the Tallink City Hotel on Laikmaa Street in the centre of the Estonian capital city Tallinn.

The hotel, which was converted by Merko in 2004 from a former service centre to Estonia’s second-largest hotel, is owned by Vara HTG OÜ, in which ownership is divided equally between AS Kapitel and AS Infortar. The hotel is operated by Tallink Hotels.

In the course of the renovation set to begin, all 332 hotel rooms, lobby, restaurant, conference centre and common areas in the 10-storey hotel will be given a makeover. The interior architect on the renovation is Meelis Press. The construction works are expected to be completed in spring 2021 and the newly renovated hotel will reopen in June.

Member of the management board of Merko Ehitus Eesti Jaan Mäe said at the signing: “As the ones who turned a former service building into a modern hotel, we are very glad to be able to be updating this distinguished building again. We know the hotel building and its particularities well, and we are able to provide comprehensive advice that will ensure that the customer’s desires and needs get the most efficient solution.”

“We’re glad that the building’s owners will take advantage of the slump in tourism caused by the pandemic and use the time to renovate the building completely. So we can start welcoming visitors in a new and even more comfortable hotel. We are also very pleased that we were able to recover almost all of the furniture and furnishings in the hotel for re-use and help a number of Estonia’s social services and welfare organisations during this complicated time period,” said member of the management board of Tallink Hotels Ave Svarts.

Member of the management boards of AS Kapitel and Vara HTG OÜ Rait Pallo said: “A very important part of our real estate management portfolio is the consistent development of products and services in our projects with the aim of maintaining their competitiveness on the market. The renovation of Tallink City Hotel has been in the planning for some time, and from a business perspective it is wise to make good use of the low period in the tourism sector for doing renovation works.”
