About the quarter
In Uus-Veerenni, you live as if in a calm small town, yet only a few steps from the heart of a major city. Many services and leisure opportunities are located right here in the neighbourhood.
The area, named after the medieval Veerenni water channel, began its new life in 2018, when Merko started developing a new residential district. Altogether, nearly 50 apartment buildings with around 1,300 homes are planned for the Uus-Veerenni neighbourhood.
The Community Pantry
The Community Pantry
The Community Pantry is both a creative playground for Uus-Veerenni residents and a practical extension of the home. It is a shared space where residents can spend time together or work independently.
The spacious and functional room located at Pille 11/3 is ideal for everyday tasks and hobbies that require a little more room. The pantry includes sink, large worktable, wide selection of tools and accessories, cleaning supplies.A small corner shop (R-Kiosk) offering essential household items and light snacks is also located here.
Value in every moment
Plenty of services and activities
Excellent central location
Like a green oasis
Plenty of space outdoors
In addition to private courtyards, Uus-Veerenni also features public areas. The largest is an 8,500 m² park offering activities for residents of all ages.
You can stroll, relax on comfortable seating areas or watch children play on climbing structures. Art lovers will enjoy the park’s unique sculpture alley.
Old concrete fragments and asphalt from the former factory site have been cleverly reused in the design, creating a striking contrast with the new buildings and adding character to the environment.
The park also features two book cabinets – one for younger readers and one for adults. You can take a book to read in the park or at home, and perhaps leave one behind for someone else to enjoy.
Sheltered seating areas allow you to enjoy the park even on cooler days. This is a park where you can simply be.
The Interim Park
ace in the heart of Uus-Veerenni. Until new residential buildings are constructed here, residents can enjoy a variety of activities such as:
- play basketball, football, volleyball, and table tennis
- climbing or swinging
- work out on 10 machines in the outdoor gym
- practising cycling skills
- having a picnic, meeting or small celebration
The design creatively reuses leftover materials from concrete factories to form seating steps, tribunes, sports field edges, table tennis tables and cycling track elements.
A welcoming community
A welcoming community
When creating the Uus-Veerenni district, we wanted neighbours to have places to meet and connect beyond the stairwell door.
Cosy courtyards, comfortable benches and imaginative playgrounds create opportunities for social interaction. There are even greenhouses and hobby rooms, ensuring that home life extends beyond the walls of your apartment.
In the Pille 11/3 building, you’ll find a practical Community Pantry – a spacious and functional room equipped with tools and supplies. Here you can wash your bicycle or stroller and handle tasks that simply require a bit more space.
Shops and services in the neighbourhood
Shops and services in the neighbourhood
Uus-Veerenni is more than just apartment buildings. When developing the district, we have considered how residents could enjoy everyday life without constantly rushing.
A café, flower shop, gym and beauty services are located right next to your home. Everyday errands can be completed quickly and conveniently without travelling far. Everyday essentials and light snacks are conveniently available at R-Kiosk.
In the Pille 11/4 building, you will find the OMAklubi training studio, where you can work out independently or with the help of personal trainers. The club offers special benefits for Uus-Veerenni residents.
Designed with children in mind
- The Uus-Veerenni district has been planned as a complete living environment where children can grow up happily and safely.
- Located at the heart of the district, Uus-Veerenni Park and the Interim Park are favourite places for children to climb, run and play. Here you’ll find sandboxes, playground equipment and trampolines.
- Play areas have also been created in residential courtyards, inviting children to spend time with friends and make new ones. Walkways are separated from car traffic, allowing children to run, cycle or skateboard safely.
Kindergarten
The district is also home to the Kalli-Kalli childcare centre and kindergarten, which functions as a community hub offering hobby activities and children’s birthday celebrations. During summer, the centre hosts summer kindergarten programmes and city camps.
Several additional childcare centres and kindergartens can also be found within walking distance in the surrounding neighbourhood.
Pets and guests
A great place to live with pets
Uus-Veerenni is also a comfortable place to live for pets and their two-legged companions.
Dogs can make new friends in the courtyard before heading out for shorter or longer walks — whether to Uus-Veerenni Park, the Interim Park or nearby walking trails. After the walk, muddy paws can easily be cleaned in the hobby room located in the basement level.
A welcoming place for guests
Guests always enjoy visiting Uus-Veerenni. The district is easy to reach by car, bicycle or public transport.
Most resident parking spaces are located in underground parking garages, leaving streets and courtyards free for pedestrians and cyclists.
Guests arriving by bicycle can use the covered street-side bike parking, while visitors arriving by car can find parking along the streets within the district.
Plenty of opportunities for sports
In Uus-Veerenni Park, you’ll find an outdoor gym, basketball court and beach volleyball court, all open to residents 24 hours a day for training or play.
Padel enthusiasts can enjoy the Uus-Veerenni outdoor padel centre, which operates from spring to autumn. The district also features a yoga studio and gym.
About 3 km away, the Järve health trail offers opportunities for rollerblading, cycling, running and discgolf. The trails connect to Tallinn’s wider network of cycling and pedestrian paths, allowing you to explore other parts of the city as well.
Sports and an active lifestyle
The district has been designed so that staying active feels natural. Walking paths of 1,000 and 2,000 steps run through courtyards and parks, making it easy to move every day without leaving the neighbourhood.
The history of Uus-Veerenni
The Uus-Veerenni district is located in a place that has always been ahead of its time. The area’s name comes from the medieval Veerenni water channel, which once directed water from the Ülemiste mill pond to the city’s drinking water and defensive moats.
In the 18th century, the renowned Luther family established their businesses here. What began as a company trading salt and flax later expanded into timber export and furniture manufacturing.
A chair with a plywood seat produced in the local factory was considered revolutionary in the late 19th century. Even waterproof glue was invented here.
A new life for Uus-Veerenni
Where raw materials for plywood production were once stored, there is now a cosy courtyard. Where loud industrial machines once operated, a peaceful park area now invites people to relax.
Former production buildings have been transformed into welcoming homes, where hundreds of families now live.
Carefully considered architectural solutions connect the heritage of the Luther factory and the historic Veerenni neighbourhood with modern architecture. The result is a diverse and high-quality urban environment — suburban in character at the edges of the district and more urban in its central areas.
Timeless materials are used throughout the architecture. Reused materials, references to the distinctive appearance of plywood and the use of the Veerenni water channel motif in landscaping all show how history can be preserved while inspiring something new.
Here, the new respects the old — and the old supports the new.
Uus-Veerenni continues to grow
New 6–12-storey residential buildings are planned for the area currently occupied by the Interim Park, although the construction schedule has not yet been determined.
Until construction begins, residents can continue to enjoy the park for sports, relaxation and play. Even after construction starts, parts of the park will remain open until the buildings are completed.
Altogether, nearly 50 apartment buildings with around 1,300 homes are planned for Uus-Veerenni. The vision for Uus-Veerenni is to become a modern and stylish neighbourhood in the heart of the city, where people who value the comforts and vibrancy of the city centre, as well as privacy and closeness to nature, feel at home.
Uus-Veerenni business building
In addition to residential buildings, a new commercial building will be developed on the edge of the district. It will include offices, service and dining spaces, as well as a sports centre.
The new building will bring even more diversity to the area and add activity to the district during weekdays. In the near future, it will be possible to connect many aspects of everyday life directly with the Uus-Veerenni neighbourhood.
The modern and energy-efficient building supports Merko’s sustainable development principles and integrates naturally with the surrounding urban environment.
