Merko completes construction work on modern waste water treatment plant in Muraste

The modern Meriküla waste water treatment plant has been completed in Muraste, a residential community in Harku municipality, ensuring the households in the growing area with the required level of service. Thanks to the new plant, the water routed into Kakumäe Bay is significantly cleaner and meets the requirements of efflux set forth in the permit for special use of water.

“The need developed because the capacity of the existing treatment plant was exhausted and more and more people are moving to the area. The change may not be very noticeable for local residents, as after all, water went down the drain before this, too, but specialists know that the water is now much cleaner when it reaches Kakumäe Bay and meets the requirements set forth in the special use permit, said Valdo Liiv, representative of OÜ Strantum, who commissioned the work. “The treatment plant established in cooperation with Merko can confidently be considered the gold standard for such projects and a major step ahead in the developments in Harku Municipality,” added Liiv.

“In the course of the work, we demolished the old waste water treatment centre and built a new and more powerful plant, which is capable of treating the waste water from 6,000 people. What made the construction more complicated was that the work had to be done in the geologically unfavourable conditions of Muraste nature reserve and that the old plant, which was on the construction lot, had to be kept operating at the same time,” said Peeter Laidma, project manager for AS Merko Ehitus AS. The roof was on the new building by Christmas, as good practices dictated and the treatment plant went into operation on St. John’s Day. “Today the trial period has been successful passed and we can only be happy about the final result,” said Laidma. The construction was performed by a consortium of AS Merko Ehitus Eesti and AS Merko Infra, and the project was co-financed by the European Union Cohesion Fund.
